Want to hear about the latest "happenings" at Loehle Aircraft?  There is always something interesting and fun going on in "The Loehle Aviation Valley" -- whether another plane (or other project) is being painted, a new aircraft kit or option is being designed, new paint line products being developed, we have special visitors, or whatever else is going on here.  Be the first to know about special sales or upcoming price increases.  Sign up for our free LOEHLE AERO NEWS below:

Over the years, we have accomplished many types of special tasks.  While designing a series of WWI and WWII aircraft (with many custom options) along with pioneering an early biplane ultralight (Aeroplane XP) and a simple classic parasol style aircraft, producing and shipping thousands of wooden propellers, creating our own paint line, and painting multiple types of aircraft has kept us pretty busy....there have been other interesting projects along the way.  Just to name a few, we:

  • Created a 12'-0" wooden propeller to hang over a bar in a restaurant in Chicago.
  • Built one of our Spad XIII aircraft (less engine) and helped hang it over the bar at a Doolittles restaurant in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area.
  • Created a P-51 spinner/4-blade propeller static display unit for a warbird museum memorial monument.
  • Replaced sailplane canopies.
  • Helped coordinate and prepare some of our customers' warbird replica aircraft for display in aircraft museums.
  • Repaired fuel tank weeping in the RV series of aircraft.
  • Repaired aircraft hangar doors.
  • Designed and built custom aircraft trailers.
  • Repaired antique sailplanes.
  • Painted a military desk for hangar use.
  • Designed metal signs.
  • Created custom nose art and graphics for aircraft.
  • Painted a street rod and a Miata sports car.
  • Refurbished and repainted a custom VW (in progress now).
  • Built and custom painted a zebra camouflauge Spad XIII to hang at the entrance of the Singapore Zoo.
  • Refinished two Bellanca aircraft to look like new without recovering (rejuvenated).
  • Refinished warbird parts.
  • Coordinated with Father Goose and the Operation Migration team to hold an ultralight/light plane fly-in at the local airport.
  • Served as EAA chapter President and Secretary; planned and worked with local volunteers to hold a well attended chili fly-in at the local airport.
  • Assisted with Young Eagles projects.
  • Served as a founding member on the Dream Tullahoma committee to raise awareness and community pride in Tullahoma's rich aerospace heritage.
  • Held 7 annual Open House days at the Loehle factory, with up to 500 guests from as far away as Germany, Ireland and Australia.
  • Maintained our 1,800' grass air strip.
  • Repaired hundreds of dents and painted a heavily hail damaged Beech Baron to made it look almost new.

Whew!  And that's just a few of the things accomplished.  How did we get all that done?  It has been an interesting journey...

Having said all that....  We have more of a variety of skills than your usual small manufacturing facility, and welcome new and interesting projects.

We specialize in the RV series of aircraft, and understand the need for help with the composite parts such as the cowling, wheel pants, wing tips, and fairings.  We can take your parts and prep/paint through primer and return them to you for mating with the rest of your aircraft for painting.  Or we can paint your whole RV.  We have experience ...after painting RV-10s, RV-7As, RV-8s, etc.

RV-10 - John Miller - Before RV-10 - Before We Started the Painting Process
RV-10 - After - John Miller RV-10 - After Mike Loehle Painted It
RV-7A Parts - Larry Wilhite RV-7A Parts

Working with the RV composite parts with the Loehle Aero Coatings system makes the whole process much easier and faster.  If you would rather we do the composite parts for you, just ship them to us and we'll work our magic up through primer for you (or through color and clear if you prefer).

There is an art to getting a totally smooth surface....that's the homework stage....and where you can excel with Loehle Aero Coatings.  Whether metal or composite surfaces on your RV, you can get that beautiful "dripping wet look" --- whether you do the work or we do the work.  This RV-7 was painted by Mike Loehle and crew and it looked absolutely gorgeous when it flew home.

Mazda Miata Mazda Miata - Looks Great in Loehle Aero Coatings

Once in awhile, we get someone who just insists that they want their car painted by Mike Loehle.  While it's not our focus really, you have to admit that this is a snappy looking little car - especially with a new coat of Loehle Aero Coatings paint.

Model Helicopter Model Helicopter

Loehle Aero Coatings is also a perfect paint for all kinds of models.  While we tend to think in terms of larger containers most of the time, there are instances when just a little great paint makes a project turn out excellent.  Mike painted this helicopter for a local model enthusiast.

K-13 and Cherokee Sailplanes Sailplane Restoration - ASK-13 and Cherokee

Since we work in wood with most of our aircraft kits, it's a natural for us to be able to help wood sailplane owners repair and restore their aircraft.  Sometimes there is more required than just doing the painting....and we pay close attention to detail when it comes to inspecting the wood before recovering and painting.

Sailplane Trailer Painting Sailplane Trailer Painting

You need a decent looking trailer to transport your sailplane....this trailer just needed a facelift.  Now it looks brand new!  While we don't advertise this as something we do, we have not only painted many trailers but have built several from scratch to transport our aircraft demo planes to Oshkosh and Sun 'n Fun air shows.

P-40 Chinese Star Decals P-40 Chinese Star Decals
5151 Star and Bar - Glen Holder Stars and Bars and Graphics

We have almost always chosen a paint scheme that requires some type of graphics to make them look more authentic or just better looking.  In fact, when we first starting putting vinyl decals on our demo aircraft, it was so new there were no instructions about how to put them on wet (learned the hard way).

T-6 Oil Tank Warbird Parts - T-6 Oil Tank

We were told to never spray clear over the vinyl graphics (because the clear would yellow), but our Loehle Aero Coatings clear is still beautiful over aircraft parts painted in 1992!

After awhile, it seemed to make sense to learn how to make our own decals....so we often cut our own custom designs (and offer appropriate decal sets to our Loehle aircraft kit builders).  Painted-on graphics like our Flying Tiger emblem are sometimes needed, and Mike's brother (Brian Loehle) does an excellent job with such tasks.  He is an amazing model builder....and paints the emblems on the shoulder patches of the pilots in the models!

T-6 Oil Tank Warbird Parts - T-6 Oil Tank

Sometimes a small but important part needs some TLC, like this T-6 oil tank.  While our paint is on full warbirds like the TBM Avenger at Quantico Marine Museum and the F-15 at the AEDC Air Force Base main gate, sometimes the need is much smaller.

Sandy Loehle and Mary Raper - Young Eagles Paperwork Young Eagles Coordinators - Mary Raper and Sandy Loehle

John and Matthew Loehle were able to catch several Young Eagles flights as they grew up, so Mike and Sandy have volunteered numerous times over the years to make sure many other young potential aviators have a chance to see what flying is all about.

Most people in the U.S. probably recognize the name "Father Goose" and have seen the movie "Fly Away Home".  It's all about the Operation Migration team that leads whooping cranes from Canada to Florida to help save them from extinction --- but they use an ultralight as the lead bird.  Loehle Aircraft has provided parts to Bill Lishman (Father Goose) for his ultralight in the past, and were privileged to help coordinate the Tullahoma Festival of Wings 2005 fundraiser fly-in for the Operation Migration cause.  We wound up rolling the grass runway, inviting and coordinating the ultralight groups flying in, doing much of the PR, coordinating with the local officials, and so much more that it took about 4 weeks focus away from our regular business operations.  But it was interesting and we were glad to help Father Goose and crew.
